From PC World's Dynamite Downloads, October 2002, page 119

If you're dissatisfied with the word choices offered by the Thesaurus tool in Microsoft Word, then this is the program for you. Idea Magic finds synonyms using a database of 30,000 words, and works not only in Word, but in Notepad, WordPad, and even Excel. When you select a word for it to search on, it gives you all of its various contexts in one pane and provides a list of synonyms for the selected context in another pane. For instance, typing in slippery brings up contexts such as "smoothness" and "improbity" and a list of synonyms for the currently selected context. Now the right words won't escape you.

Our Review:
Tray Suite is a must-have download if you want to exhibit a flair for the english language in every piece of correspondence or pros. Its primary function is to ensure that you've spelt words correctly - a hot-key will run any selection of text through its spell-check; providing alternate spellings to words that seem dubious. Another hot-key provides access to an excellent dictionary/thesaurus that allows you to enter words for lookup - instantly enlightening you as to their meaning, their use, alternative words, their applications in the english language, etc. etc. Tray Suite gives anyone a real command of the english language - right at your mouse-tips.

Our Review:
This is excellent. YTSEditor is almost like any comprehensive word processor. Of course it doesn't have all the features but it does come with the most commonly used features in word processing and definitely much much more than wordpad. Comes with it's own spell checker and even highlights misplet words with the usual squiggly lines in MSWord. Price? Very cheap! Supports rtf, txt, and html formats.

Our Review:
This suite of programs rocks! It comes with an awesome text editor and a built in spell checker / thesaurus / dictionary that runs in the system tray. The text editor is very good and comes with all of the usual HTML editing features, like colored tags, and a full set of JAVA, Perl, C, C++, SQL editing tools. The tray program is very good, coming up with clear, concise definitions and excellent spellchecking. Well worth the price.

YTS Words Suite

You'd think that a spelling checker would be part of any program that deals with text creation, but there are thousands of apps that don't have one. Make up for this shortcoming with YTS (YourTraySpell) Word Suite. This tray-based set of useful apps can check spelling of text from a variety of different Windows applications -- including text editors, drawing programs, and HTML editors. It comes with an American English dictionary, but you can add dictionaries for other languages without too much difficulty. YTS Word Suite also includes a thesaurus, a definitions dictionary, and its own tabbed text editor that more than makes up for the limitations of Notepad. The interface is both elegant and intuitive, with several options (including configurable hotkeys). If you're looking for a great way to spellcheck or edit text, plus look up synonyms and definitions, YTS Word Suite is highly recommended. You can try out this fully-functional evaluation edition for 30 days. Reviewed on Aug 8 1999.

Then in a new review for Version 4.0 they say "Version 4 has a completely redesigned spell engine and 10 language interface. YTSEditor is a completely rewritten rich text editor and Tray Suite was rewritten with new functionality and speed." Reviewed on Mar 27 2001

Here is what they say about YTS Version 2.0

It seems that a spell checker should be part of any program that deals with text creation, but there are thousands of apps that don't have one. Make up for this shortcoming with YourTraySpell. This system tray-based tool can spell check text from a variety of different Windows applications including text editors, drawing programs, and HTML editors. Just highlight the text you want to check, activate YourTraySpell with a Hotkey and YTS automatically checks the selection. The utility automatically checks the spelling for you. When you finish making any corrections, YourTraySpell copies the updated text back into the original application. You can use the program for single words, phrases, paragraphs, or entire documents. There's also a built-in thesaurus module you can open with a double-left-click on the program icon, or from a right-click menu link. YourTraySpell comes with an American English dictionary, but you can add dictionaries for other languages without too much difficulty. The program also offers configurable hotkeys, plus a decent text editor which overcomes many of Notepad's limitations -- and has a spell checker (of course). When you register, you'll get a Definitions Dictionary. This 160,000 word dictionary provides meanings and context of words, in addition to synonyms, antonyms, and more. In this evaluation edition (which may be used indefinitely), registration reminders are pasted back into your application when spelling is corrected. If you're looking for a simple way to spell check text regardless of its source, this may be just the application you need. Reviewed on Sep 7 1998.

The spell checker is accessed with a single mouse click while the thesaurus is activated with a double click. This feature can also be changed to suit the way you work. Thesaurus Magic

Rocket Download Thesaurus Magic Review:

This great download presents the powerful Roget's Thesaurus, making it conveniently accessible from Windows' system tray. Thesaurus Magic is a much better alternative to the thesaurus included in most word processors. First of all, the program is completely independent, meaning that it can be used with any Windows application, from MS Word to ICQ. Second, other tools simply can't beat Roget's selection of 30,000 words and 10,000 context words that covers nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives.

All of your thesaurus referencing can be performed on the fly. By pressing a customizable hotkey, the program will offer all word alternatives for your selected text. You can also highlight and copy a word, and Magic's Clipboard feature will quickly look it up. Thesaurus Magic is very easy to use, and will optionally load whenever you boot up your computer. This shareware version is fully functional, but expires after 30 days.

Dave's Pick

YTS Words Suite
Good words are hard to come by. I'll be honest with you: it's no easy task to come up with a new and original column every day, and without my trusty dictionary and thesaurus, Dave's Pick would be as compelling as your local phone book. I've tried to rid myself of the paperbound monsters, but most of the spelling tools that accompany those $300 word processors are about as useful as a sprinkler in a rainstorm. The folks at D C AL CODA must have heard my screams of frustration.

YTS Words Suite 3.01 combines a spell-checker, dictionary, and thesaurus into one powerful utility. It's fast, intuitive, and works with any application that accepts text input.

For the unwashed masses (like me) who don't have the artistic styling of Hemingway or Fitzgerald, words are hard to come by -- especially good words. But face the facts: communicating your ideas clearly and concisely in this digital day and age can make or break you.

YTS Words Suite integrates the tools you need to get communicate efficiently. Including an on-the-fly spell checker that speaks 14 different languages, a lengthy dictionary, and an electronic Roget's Thesaurus with over 30,000 word substitutions, you'll find it extremely difficult to be at a loss for words. Aspiring doctors and budding hypochondriacs will appreciate this application's ability to speak Medical-ese as well.

Once installed, the program takes up residence in the System tray. Simply highlight and copy the text you need assistance with (or use the built-in YTSEditor), click once on the YTS icon and your copy is checked for spelling errors. The dictionary and thesaurus can be accessed with a right-click of your mouse button. Mold the application to your needs by configuring hot keys and other options in the Preferences dialog. With this kind of help, who needs over-priced bloat ware from the big boys?

YourTraySpell is the total package it contains a Spell Checker, a Roget's 1911 Thesaurus and a Text Editor. You can also setup HotKeys so that you can spell check on the fly within applications. Spell Checking: Spell check, with unparalleled options to control how you want to spell check. Definitions Dictionary: 160,000 word dictionary to lookup synonyms and antonyms for Nouns, Verbs, Adverbs and Adjectives. Find words to use as replacements or use to find the meaning and context of words. The dictionaries are available in many languages. Roget's 1911 Public Domain Thesaurus: 30,000 words, 10,000 context words, from which to find replacement Nouns, Verbs, Adverbs and Adjectives. YTSEditor: "your Notepad replacement", a full featured tabbed text editor.

This is a Word Processing program with most of the usual features. Lacking is the capability to bold or underlined text. Common characters/symbols insertion is possible. This is a handy feature. Page setup includes: Page size, envelope, index card, portrait/landscape orientation, and default margins. Label size would be a welcome addition. Tools consist of a Spell Checker, a Thesaurus and a Definitions Dictionary. These are accessible via function keys as well as from the menu. The Definitions Dictionary is especially helpful as it gives the definition of any word typed into the search box. In addition, it provides for file associations, filters, spell checker behavior and font size and color. All fonts available on the system are accessible for the YTSEditor. Unfortunately, you cannot highlight a section of text and apply a particular font to it. Font changes apply to the entire document. YTSEditor 3.0 is a handy text editor which is easily accessed from the System Tray. Spelling, Synonyms, and Definitions help is something we all need help with from time to time; having it at your finger tips is great. The help file provides extensive assistance with the various program options.

Notepad doesn't come with a spell checker. And, believe it or not, it lacks a thesaurus as well. So this software developer threw together an amazing package which combines the power of these basic language tools with a text editor and expansive dictionary (more language sets are available). It sits quietly in the system tray until I invoke it with either a keyboard shortcut or a mouse click. Simply copy a word to the clipboard and the YTS Words Suite will do the rest. Some suite components are also available separately, but I'd stick with this puppy.

This is a spelling checker and thesaurus that sits in your system tray. Simply copy word(s) to be checked, then click the icon. This fast, on-the-fly method works with any program. The new ClipViewer allows progress viewing. Many options are included, and it's great for applications that aren't equipped with spelling checkers. YourTraySpell has several language dictionaries.

YourTraySpell as you can imagine from its name resides in the taskbar tray awaiting commands. Its main function is spell checking and the use of the 1911 Public Domain Roget's Thesaurus. The spell checker and thesaurus can be used in a number of ways. First you can use the notepad replacement editor and write your text from its own application. This editor also supports RTF.

The editor supports cut, paste, copy, save as, save all for multiple opened files, open file, close file, and close all. The print function is also supported. On the main toolbar there are quick access icons to most of these functions along with the spell check and thesaurus functions. One key note of YourTraySpell is the ability to edit the dictionary allowing you to add words as required, or technical terms which many dictionaries tend to exclude. This is a super addition for techs.

The others ways of using YourTraySpell are assigned hot keys bringing up specific functions, and transferring words via clipboard to use the spellchecker and thesaurus. The thesaurus is a powerful addition. This allows one to improve their use of the language by offering alternate words. This improves reading of the text and helps prevent needless repetition. As an example, for the word "catalogue" it offered over 30 similar words, impressive to say the least.

YourTraySpell is an excellent document utility that worked seamlessly in Win95/98. It was tested using Notepad, YTSEditor, and Outlook 98 with outstanding results. The best way to use this application was to write straight from YTSEditor and transfer the text or save as a file when complete. This saves bouncing around from window to window and allows one to concentrate on the task at hand.

Overall, a great writing utility that is easy to use and functions as it claims.

A full-featured text editor is also included.

This newest release includes a 160,000 word definitions dictionary which provides instant access to synonyms and antonyms, as well as the meaning and context of words.

Here, for comparison, is what SoftSeek said about the previous version.

D C AL CODA Note: Please note that with the use of Hotkeys and the YTS (Application) Actions, you do not need to copy the text to the clipboard. This is done automatically with most applications.

YourTraySpell sits in the Win95 System Tray, waiting to intercept text that you copy. Then when you click the TrayIcon, YourTraySpell spell checks that selection and when finished makes the corrected text available for passing back into the original application. This is very useful for use with programs that don't come with a spellchecker. YourTraySpell also comes with a Thesaurus that is just as easy to use.

100 Best Shareware & Freeware

If you weren't even a runner-up in your high school spelling bee, you probably wish all your programs had spell checkers. YourTraySpell might be the perfect solution for you. This general-purpose spell checker interacts with the Clipboard to extend spell checking to any program. Just copy the text to the Clipboard, then double-click on the YourTraySpell icon on the tray. YourTraySpell checks the document and offers many of the same spell-checking features you'd expect from a built-in checker, including global replace.
